Fateful encounter with Euglena

The reality I witnessed overseas for the first time

In the summer of 1998, Mitsuru Izumo was in Bangladesh. I was excited about my first overseas internship and the upcoming internship at Grameen Bank.
18-year-old Izumo had a desire to help people in need of poverty and hunger. "Poor means you don't have enough food."
-Thinking this way, Izumo brought a lot of cookie bars in his bag for distribution in Bangladesh.

However, after spending a few days in Bangladesh, I realized that it was different from what I had imagined.
"Everyone is eating plenty of rice. There is curry. No one is hungry ..." When I observed it closely, I came across a fact.
"I'm eating rice and curry full, but I'm eating curry without ingredients day after day ..."
"Well, I'm eating a plain, nutritious diet and I'm malnourished."

Interaction with children in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has plenty of rice and wheat. The self-sufficiency rate of rice is also 100%. Hunger can be surpassed by rice in his own country. However, there was an overwhelming shortage of foods that are nutritional sources other than carbohydrates, such as meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, and fruits. The lack of these means that the child lacks the nutrients such as proteins, vitamins and minerals needed for growth.
Many people are at risk of life due to their low nutritional value, even if they have no trouble filling their stomachs.
What can I do?
"I want to solve the food problem"
-Izumo returned to Japan with this thought.

Encounter of "fate"

In order to solve food and nutrition problems, we first need knowledge related to it. Izumo was originally enrolled in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Tokyo, but decided to transfer to the Faculty of Agriculture.
Department of Agricultural Structure Management, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Tokyo. Here, Izumo meets "fate."

One of the reasons why it is difficult to supply food other than carbohydrates in Bangladesh is that there is no mechanism to deliver it fresh. Freshness is the life of meat and vegetables. If it is difficult to deliver many kinds and quantities of meat and vegetables while they are fresh, is there a way to find "materials" that are packed with various nutrients and deliver them all at once?
Izumo asked, no matter who he was, for such food. However, I couldn't meet them easily, and someday I started to think, "Maybe there is no single material that contains various nutrients in nature ...".

One day, after a drinking party in the circle, I had the opportunity to talk with Suzuki, a junior in the first grade of the same Faculty of Agriculture.
"I'm looking for a" material "that contains various nutrients, but I don't have one."
"Euglena may be close to Izumo's ideal, because it is a creature between animals and plants."
When Izumo heard this, the shock of Inazuma ran.

Euglena seen under a microscope

A rare creature that is green like a plant, has chlorophyll, but can move like an animal. If we can eat this, we may be able to save Bangladeshi children.

Euglena, this is it.
Then, the challenge of outdoor mass culture of Euglena, which no one has realized yet, has begun.
