Euglena Advances Biofuel Collaboration in ASEAN at the 3rd AZEC Ministerial Meeting
Euglena Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Mitsuru Izumo) attended the showcasing ceremony held as a side event of the 3rd Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Ministerial Meeting on Friday, October 17, 2025, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The ceremony highlighted collaborations between Japan and AZEC partner countries.

AZEC is a collaborative framework involving 11 partner countries, including Japan and Malaysia, aimed at achieving carbon neutrality and net-zero emissions in the region. The Ministerial Meeting and showcasing ceremony were held in Kuala Lumpur on October 17.
As previously announced, Euglena is jointly promoting the construction and operation of a commercial-scale biofuel production plant (hereinafter “the biorefinery”) in Malaysia with PETRONAS Mobility Lestari Sdn Bhd (a subsidiary of Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS), headquartered in Malaysia) and Enilive S.p.A. (a subsidiary of Eni S.p.A., headquartered in Italy).
On July 16, 2025, Euglena increased its equity stake in the joint venture company “Pengerang Biorefinery Sdn. Bhd.”—which will oversee the biorefinery’s construction and operation—to 15% (hereinafter “the Investment”). During the ceremony, Euglena and PETRONAS jointly announced the completion of this investment.

The biorefinery is expected to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), a next-generation biodiesel. With the completion of the Investment, Euglena anticipates handling approximately 100,000 KL of biofuels annually. Construction is progressing smoothly toward the planned start of operations during the second half of 2028.

This initiative marks a significant step in expanding Euglena’s biofuel business in the ASEAN region and serves as a symbolic example of international collaboration toward realizing AZEC’s vision of a decarbonized society.
Euglena remains committed to advancing decarbonization through a range of initiatives, including its biorefinery project. Guided by its purpose to “Make People and the Earth Healthy,” the company continues to drive innovation and collaboration toward a carbon-neutral and sustainable future.
