On April 3rd, Euglena and RIKEN announced that they would carry out a project to find their own local euglena, the "Euglena Project for Everyone" (hereinafter referred to as the "Minmido Project").

In fact, the group who collected the water at the point where Euglena is likely to be in the Tsurumi River (see the first part at that time) studied Our in order to discover the local Euglena in the scooped water. I came to the room.

The time is 12 o'clock, and the research starts from here.

Arrived, take a look for the time being

The group arrived at Our central laboratory after connecting trains.

Central Research Laboratory Our

To find Euglena (0.05 mm) smaller than hair, yes, use a microscope.

There are various research equipment

First, start searching for Euglena with a basic optical microscope that is easy to use.

Take a peek

High school student A: "Samples 1 and 2, it looks like nothing ..."

High school student B: "But you can see sample 4 ...!"

High school student C: "The microscope is out of focus ..."

Everyone looks for Euglena in a lab coat

Raise the level and take a look with a microscope with a camera

I had a hard time finding Euglena with an ordinary (optical) microscope.

At 12:15, I decided to raise the specs a little and take a look at a microscope with a camera equipped with a high-magnification lens.

Members looking for Euglena while everyone is watching

Students searching all over for Euglena.

High school student A: "Hmm ...?"

Student B: "Hmm ...!?"

High school student A: "I was there !!"

At 12:30, a voice of joy!

Everyone: Oh! !! !!

Researcher checking the screen

You can see the beautiful Euglena firmly!

The inside of the blue circle is Euglena!

Everyone who clearly confirmed the beautiful shape of Euglena like a paisley pattern.

The red dots called eye spots are also vividly reflected (there are many phytoplankton around).

"Local Euglena" that I was able to discover

After this, everyone who found four types of "local Euglena" in total.

I found it in the collection and did my best

The Euglena I found this time is different from Euglena Gracilis, which is used by Euglena in various businesses (more than 100 types of Euglena are known).

"Local Euglena" was also found on the Tsurumi River, a river in the suburbs of Tokyo.
Collecting and discovering makes the event almost half a day, and you can do it in no time! That's not to say, but a child (← Euglena) found near me may save the earth's crisis as a new species of Euglena!
If you can feel the dream ...

For those who used to play in rivers and ponds, those who are interested in Euglena, those who are not sure but are interested in the great discoveries of the century, etc., please join us in the "Euglena Project for Everyone". !!
