Scenario analysis of climate change impact

In this scenario analysis, we are looking to achieve the Paris Agreement goal of "keeping the world average temperature rise well below 2 ° C compared to before the Industrial Revolution and pursuing efforts to keep it at 1.5 ° C" and realizing a carbon-free society. In addition to the 1.5 ° C scenario, we considered the 4 ° C scenario, assuming that climate change countermeasures will not progress sufficiently worldwide. In addition, 2030 was included in the analysis as a range where the probability of our business can be foreseen. We have set the healthcare business and energy / environment business of Euglena Co., Ltd. as the target businesses of the analysis, and organized the impact of climate change on the Group. In the scenario analysis, IEA SDS, IPCC RCP2.6 / SR1.5, WRI Aqueduct Optimistic, etc. were referred to at 1.5 ° C, and IEA STEPS, IPCC RCP8.5, WRI Aqueduct BaU, etc. were referred to at 4 ° C.

Analysis of key opportunities and risks related to climate change

Based on the world image assumed in each scenario, as the first step, we have comprehensively listed the risk and opportunity items for the target projects selected during the preparatory stage. As the second step, we qualitatively evaluated the importance of risk based on the magnitude of the possibility that risks / opportunities will occur and the magnitude of the business impact if the risks / opportunities become reality (). Figure 1). At the final stage, based on discussions with Executive Officer and department personnel, the degree of impact and occurrence of risks and opportunities on the business are evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively, and classified into three stages: small, medium, and high. did.

重要度評価

As a result, we organized the climate risks and opportunities expected for each business as shown in the chart below, and identified important risks and opportunities.

risk

  • Damage to production bases and distribution functions due to intensified abnormal weather under a 4 ° C scenario
  • 1.5℃シナリオ下でのカーボンプライシング導入による設備投資や原材料調達コスト

Was identified as a risk factor that should be considered in particular, and a quantitative evaluation was conducted on the impact on the business. In the future, we will carry out more detailed risk analysis and strive for more comprehensive risk management.

Risk cases Suspension of production bases and distribution bases due to floods and storm surges

We evaluated the impact of abnormal weather such as floods and storm surges on the Group's distribution bases. Hazard maps and inundation forecast maps issued by local governments were used for evaluation of each production and distribution base. For each distribution base, we calculated the loss of sales due to the suspension of business of the base based on the expected number of days of business suspension and business stagnation, referring to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism "Flood Control Economic Survey Manual (draft)". .. As a result, as of 2030, the decrease in sales due to the inability to supply products due to the inundation of distribution bases was limited, and it was evaluated as a risk that could be dealt with. In the future, we will take measures such as formulating a BCP in the event of a flood and predicting inundation, and strive to mitigate and eliminate risks. For each production base, the hazard map issued by the local government confirms that the risk of flooding is low and that the possibility of significant delays in production due to flooding is low.

Risk cases Impact of temperature rise and water shortage on Ishigaki Island Euglena production

chance

Under the scenario of less than 1.5 ° C, where climate change is being dealt with, consumers are becoming more environmentally conscious, and we anticipate that the evaluation of our low-environmental health care products will continue to improve in the future. We will continue to utilize it for business development along with other opportunities.

Energy / environment business
Related to climate change
Major risks / opportunities

Similarly, in the energy and environment business, we qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated the degree of impact and occurrence of risks and opportunities on the business. On the other hand, since this business is in the pre-commercial phase and it is difficult to make an appropriate evaluation, we will disclose the results of qualitative analysis of risks and opportunities in FY2021 and quantitative risks and main factors after FY12 / 2022. We will disclose the corresponding action areas. At this time, we are proceeding with the analysis of risks and opportunities, including the following.

Opportunity example Increased sales due to tightening of laws and regulations to promote the use of biofuels

Demand for biofuels is expected to expand globally toward the realization of carbon neutrality, and further tightening of laws and regulations such as the quota system and carbon tax will improve price competitiveness for petroleum fuels and dramatically expand the market. It is predicted that. Demand is expected to grow in all "land, sea, and air" industries, with biofuels expected to be introduced in 41% of road transport, 45% of aircraft, and 21% of ships by 2050. Due to the expected shortage, we expect sales to increase as production increases. We have set a goal of increasing the annual production capacity of biofuels from 125 kiloliters per year in the current demonstration plant to 250,000 kiloliters per year by completing a commercial plant in 2025. Assuming that the commercial plant is completed and the supply of biojet fuel and next-generation biodiesel fuel is 125,000 kiloliters each, the total sales are estimated to be about 50 billion yen.

気候変動問題に対する当社グループの戦略・取り組み

Biofuel business that contributes to mitigation of climate change

The biofuel "SUSTEO" manufactured and sold by our company has gained the support of many companies and organizations, and the total number of biofuel supply destinations is more than 40. We will continue our research, manufacturing, and sales efforts related to biofuels in order to further expand the circle of support. Currently, in anticipation of business opportunities under the 1.5 ° C scenario, we are aiming to complete the construction of a commercial plant in 2025 in collaboration with domestic and overseas partners. Full-scale supply of next-generation biodiesel fuel and biojet fuel will start after 2026, and by widely introducing them to moving objects such as automobiles, ships, and airplanes, the 1.5 ° C scenario will be realized and carbon neutral will be achieved in 2050. We will make a great contribution.

Initiatives through the healthcare business

The Group regards sustainable reduction of environmental burden in its business activities as one of the important management issues, and is particularly focusing on "control of climate change". Established by the first CFO (Chief Future Officer) and summit members, "We aim to build a system that allows customers to take environmentally conscious actions regardless of their height or low awareness of the environment." Based on this policy, we have been striving to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the healthcare business by significantly reducing the amount of petroleum-derived plastics used in products and packaging and using renewable energy, and will strengthen further efforts in the future. We will continue to.

Effort example Complete abolition of PET bottle products

In 2020, we decided to abolish existing PET bottle products for beverages and allow customers to choose whether or not to use plastic straws for some products in order to reduce the amount of petroleum-derived plastics used in products. did. Our main beverage product, "Euglena for the body", currently uses cart cans instead of PET bottles. A carton is a recyclable packaging container similar to a paper carton. In addition, since 30% or more of thinned lumber and domestic lumber are used as raw materials, it is possible to grow healthy forests with high CO 2 absorption efficiency and contribute to the prevention of global warming. In addition, some products use straws containing biomass plastic to reduce petroleum-derived plastics. We will continue to develop and sell our products using containers and packaging that have a low environmental impact.
